Sunlight increases serotonin levels which in turn makes you happy. Low levels of serotonin are associated with a higher risk of seasonal affective disorder or SAD. This is a form of depression often triggered by the changing seasons when the level of sunlight is reduced. Getting outside even on a dull day will help boost serotonin more than staying indoors. Sunlight is a natural painkiller.
